GOVERNMENT PROJECTS

National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV)

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) provides ships from the National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF) as training vessels for the six state maritime academies. The agency has invested in a new build program to replace these older ships with new, purpose-built training vessels that will better meet the academies training needs while also providing the U.S. with ships that can support disaster response and other critical national needs.

The NSMV will feature numerous instructional spaces and a full training bridge with accommodation for up to 600 cadets to train in a first-rate maritime academic environment at sea. State maritime academies graduate approximately 70% of all new officers each year—the merchant mariners who help keep cargoes and the economy moving. Many also support U.S. national security by crewing military sealift vessels.

WHAT IS THE NSMV?

  • America’s state maritime training academies are using vessels that have exceeded their useful life. These older training ships are not representative of in-service vessels where cadets may expect to serve.
  • The NSMV is the next-generation training fleet that will address a critical shortage of qualified officers necessary to crew government and commercial owned sealift ships.
  • NSMVs will be state-of-the-art training and educational platforms designed to fulfill numerous roles as highly functional national assets. Ship specifications will be compatible with the pier length, draft restrictions, and mooring limitations at each of the maritime training academies.
  • The NSMVs will provide a strong U.S. maritime fleet crewed by the world’s best-trained merchant mariners. They will also provide essential capacity and manpower to support U.S. operations all over the world in times of war, national emergency or even peace time.
