Hanwha Philly Shipyard is a leading U.S. shipbuilder with a state-of-the art shipbuilding facility that has earned a reputation as a preferred provider of ocean-going merchant vessels with a track record of delivering quality ships, having delivered around 50% of all large ocean-going U.S. Jones Act commercial ships since 2000.
Hanwha Systems and Hanwha Ocean acquired Philly Shipyard on December 19th, 2024 from Aker ASA, a Norwegian industrial investment company with ownership interests in energy, green technologies and marine biotechnology. Founded in 1952, Hanwha is South Korea’s seventh-largest conglomerate and ranked in the Fortune Global 500. Hanwha Systems and Hanwha Ocean acquired Philly Shipyard from Aker ASA for $100 million beginning a new era at the shipyard. Hanwha brings more than 50 years of shipbuilding experience and leadership in defense technologies as well as the backing of a Fortune Global 500 company named to Time’s 100 Most Influential Companies list.
2020
Awarded a contract by TOTE Services for the construction of up to five National Security Multi-Mission Vessels (NSMVs) for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD)
Received an order for the first two NSMVs with a total contract value of approximately USD 630 million
Completed ship repair and maintenance work on a U.S. Government vessel, the FSS Pollux
Awarded contracts to participate in industry studies for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) program and the U.S. Navy’s Auxiliary General Ocean Surveillance (T-AGOS(X)) program

Delivered second CV3600 container vessel to Matson (Hull 030)
Awarded first two repair & maintenance contracts for the FSS Antares and the FSS Pollux, large MARAD sister-ships managed by TOTE Services
Awarded prime contract for design studies for the U.S. Navy’s Common Hull Auxiliary Multi-Mission Platform (CHAMP) program
Completed ship repair and maintenance work on a U.S. Government vessel, the FSS Antares
