Partnering with Government for National Maritime Readiness

Hanwha Philly Shipyard, Inc. (HPSI) is a trusted shipbuilding partner to the U.S. government, delivering government vessels that enhance maritime training, readiness, and mission support. Our government and national security programs reflect the precision, compliance, and accountability required for federal and defense platforms, supported by integrated engineering, program management, regulatory documentation, and disciplined production execution.

Core Government Work

Our government shipbuilding capabilities include:

  • National Security Multi-Mission Vessels (NSMV) delivered for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD)
  • Support for government maritime initiatives requiring specialized vessel design and construction, including production planning, quality assurance, and cross-functional schedule management

Delivering Impact for National Readiness

HPSI government projects strengthen the U.S. maritime workforce, support federal readiness objectives, and provide platforms for training at U.S. maritime academies, with each enhancing the nation’s strategic maritime infrastructure.

HPSI executes government programs in alignment with federal procurement standards and applicable Maritime Administration (MARAD), U.S. Coast Guard, and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) requirements, maintaining rigorous documentation and compliance oversight throughout design, construction, and delivery.

We deliver these outcomes by aligning with government procurement practices, maintaining rigorous documentation, and integrating naval architecture, production engineering, quality control, and compliance management to meet schedule, safety, and compliance expectations. Through disciplined execution and close collaboration with federal partners, HPSI ensures every platform meets mission requirements while providing long-term operational value.

WHAT IS THE NSMV?

  • America’s state maritime training academies are using vessels that have exceeded their useful life. These older training ships are not representative of in-service vessels where cadets may expect to serve.
  • The NSMV is the next-generation training fleet that will address a critical shortage of qualified officers necessary to crew government and commercial owned sealift ships.
  • NSMVs will be state-of-the-art training and educational platforms designed to fulfill numerous roles as highly functional national assets. Ship specifications will be compatible with the pier length, draft restrictions, and mooring limitations at each of the maritime training academies.
  • The NSMVs will provide a strong U.S. maritime fleet crewed by the world’s best-trained merchant mariners. They will also provide essential capacity and manpower to support U.S. operations all over the world in times of war, national emergency or even peace time.
